We’re looking for an integral member of our team to contribute to major client-facing projects.
We are a small, hands-on studio—our designers stay close to the work. We don’t typically use project managers; instead, creative staff manage their own workloads and communicate directly with clients. Our designers are skilled across all phases of design—from strategy, research, and concept through execution. They work comfortably both in producing high-level design output and in offering feedback and direction to other designers, while also providing art direction to freelance photographers, illustrators, and other collaborators.
Who We Hire
- Excellent designers with strong skills in publication and website design. We maintain a reputation for excellence and are looking for someone who will elevate our work.
- Multi-skilled creatives. Many of our designers also bring skills in illustration or photography. Motion graphics or front-end development experience is a plus.
- Detail-oriented professionals who understand typographic standards, build clean style sheets, and are fluent in print production processes.
- Confident, empathetic communicators who can present ideas clearly and work effectively with clients.
- Mission-driven designers interested in academic, cultural, community, and philanthropic work. Most of our clients are nonprofits; budgets are lean, but the work is meaningful and we strive for design excellence.
- Curious learners and thoughtful problem-solvers who ask good questions, embrace new industries, and adapt to the evolving nature of design practice.
- Collaborative contributors. We operate on a flexible hybrid model and value time working together in the office. While we have a few fully remote team members, this role is not remote.
- Long-term thinkers seeking a sustainable, career-oriented role. We value balance and longevity—many of our team members have been here for years.
- People who bring something unique. Tell us what perspectives, skills, or experiences you bring that might surprise us.
Project Types
- Publications: magazines, annual reports, books, brochures, and newsletters.
- Editorial design: concepting, layout, commissioning visuals, detailed design, and print production.
- Websites: sitemaps, wireframes, visual design, developer communication, QA, and content entry (primarily WordPress, some Webflow).
- Brand identities: logos, extended identity systems, and brand guidelines.
- Posters and marketing collateral: materials for events, forums, and speaker series.
On average, our workload consists of 40% publication design, 25% web/digital, 25% branding, and 10% other work. Immediate project assignments will depend on your strengths and the needs of the studio at the time of hire.
The Designer’s Role
- Designers lead the day-to-day work.
Designers are responsible for the day-to-day execution of projects and typically serve as the primary contact for their clients.
- Responsibility transitions over time.
With existing projects underway, primary client contact may remain with another designer initially. As you become familiar with the work and our processes, that responsibility will transition to you.
